'Striders' Run' event set to benefit county Humane Society
The Saline County Striders will host its third annual Run with the Dogs 5K at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 21, in the Hurricane Lake Estates subdivision of Benton.
A one-mile Dog and Jog will follow at 9 a.m.; all proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Saline County.
"This is a great partnership we have with the Humane Society because we are able to get the word out, and they can use the funds the best way they see fit to help the animals of Saline County," said Jayme Butts-Hall, Strider and race co-director.
Dogs are welcome in both races, according to Eric Bain, Strider and race co-director. For participants who do not have a dog, the Humane Society will be at the starting line, "with dogs that will be more than happy to join you on a run or walk," he added.
The entry fee is $25 for the 5K, $15 for the one-mile and $35 to participate in both races.
Honorariums and memorials are being offered this year as well, according to Butts-Hall.
"For the first time this year, we are offering people a special chance to honor or memorialize a pet that they've had to say goodbye to," she said.
For $10, the pet's name will be added to a list to appear on the back of the race shirt. April 10 is the deadline for honorariums and memorials.
Overall winners will receive awards, as well as those placing first, second and third in each age group. Age groups include: 5-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70 and plus 70.
Participants in the 5K will pick up their race packets from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and one-milers from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on race day at the subdivision's marina.
Parking will be available at the marina and selected side streets.
An aid station will be available for 5K participants around the 1 mile and 2.1 mile mark on the course. One mile Dog & Jog participants will have an aid station around the half-mile mark.
Butts said all dogs must be on a short, nylon leash; no flex/extendable leashes are permitted.
While participants may register on race day, preregistration is advised to ensure an adequate number of race shirts are available.
