Van Buren "V.B." Chism

Van Buren "V.B." Chism, 83, of Benton, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 23, with his family by his side in Bryant.
V.B., as his friends and family called him, was born in Carden Bottom, Yell County, Ark., on Dec. 13, 1928.  He was the son of Joseph Leonard and Rosie Belle Chism.
V.B. was retired from Jacuzzi Brothers Inc., where he was a tool and cutter grinder. He was an author and inventor.
V.B. received a U.S. patent, dated Aug. 8, 1978, for an archery bowstring release.  He had a love of the outdoors, was an accomplished bow hunter and gun hunter. V.B. enjoyed deer and rabbit hunting.  Some of his friends' and family's happiest memories were in the woods, hunting and camping. 
V.B. was the state champion for rabbit hunting with 13-inch female beagle hounds.  He was a horseshoe pitching champion.  He enjoyed history, especially genealogy. He loved life.
V.B. was an active member of the Social Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Benton.  He helped build the original church building, and served as the songleader for many years.  He loved gospel music, which he shared with all who entered his home.
V.B. was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rosie Belle Chism; four brothers, James Thurmon, Lucion, Merida, and Vernon Chism; and five sisters, Vera Oglesby, Lillian George, Berniece Smith, Flora Wood and Virginia Milks.
V.B. was the last of his siblings to join the Lord Jesus Christ in his heavenly home.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jewell Dean Hill Chism; a daughter, Brenda Melvin and husband Donnie of Benton; a son, Clint Chism and wife Denise of Bauxite; 10 grandchildren, Teresa Litton and husband Matt of Spring, Texas, Carla Lovell and husband Mike of Benton, Cara Hough and husband Dusty of Forney, Texas, Joshua Melvin and wife Brooke of Shannon Hills, Candice West and husband Monty of Bauxite, Joey Chism and wife Shannon, Caleb Chism, and wife, Haley, both of Bauxite, Casey Harris, Kim Robbins and husband, Lance all of Benton, Carley Harris of Little Rock.  Eleven Great grandchildren, Cassie and Paul Lovell, Avery and Dalton Hough, Jackson and Emmalynn Melvin, Clay Price and Alisha West, Taren and Brody Chism and Sadie Robbins.
Funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, at Ashby Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Social Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is set from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 25, at the funeral home.
