A final public hearing on animal problems in Saline County will be held today.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. in Courtroom 1 at the courthouse, 200 North Main St. in Downtown Benton. The Saline County Public Works Committee will discuss the proposed animal shelter start-up budget and the 2009 shelter budget. The proposed budget is around $300,000, County Judge Lanny Fite said. Problems concerning abandoned cats and dogs were discussed at two previous public hearings. Fite has said his office receives calls nearly every day about abandoned or starving animals. The Saline County Humane Society in Bauxite operates a shelter, which does not euthanize the animals. The county-operated shelter would euthanize. Fite has noted measures would be taken to get the animals adopted before resorting to euthanasia. Public comments will be welcomed at the meeting today, he said. The Quorum Court will meet Tuesday, Jan. 15, to form new committees, including one to handle the animal shelter, Fite said.
