(Photo special to the Courier) One Saline County girl couldn’t wait to help fellow children suffering from hair loss. Rebekah Curtis, 9, had her first haircut last weekend to donate to Locks of Love.
“We took off about 12 inches,” Sabrina Crouse of Shear Perfections in Bryant, who cut Rebekah’s hair, said. “She’s precious,” Crouse said. “She had been growing it out and this was her idea. She was so happy when it was off.” Crouse said she’s cut hair for people who have donated their locks to Wigs for Kids and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Rebekah, a third-grader at Davis Elementary School, said she wanted to help kids with cancer. “I feel very happy,” she said, noting she loves her new haircut. Her mother, Barbara Curtis, manager of the Pulaski Bank branch in Bryant, said Rebekah was excited to have her hair cut. Last year Rebekah came to her mom, Barbara Curtis, and said, “‘Mom, please let me get my hair cut.’” “I told her about how kids get sick and lose their hair and to let it grow a little longer so she could donate it,” Barbara said. After the hair was cut, it had to have bands around it every two inches. Barbara said she then wrapped it in tissue paper, put it in bubble wrap and sent it to Locks of Love in Lake Worth, Fla. Rebekah will receive a certificate in the mail for her contribution. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most of the children who benefit have lost their hair because of a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure.
