By Jillian Duke Courier Staff Benton city employees will start being recognized for a job well done.
Prizes will include a plaque given by Mayor Rick Holland at a City Council monthly meeting and dinner for two at Dizzy’s Grill and Bistro. The Personnel Committee, chaired by Alderman Bill Donnor, agreed that naming an employee of the month is important to show the city’s appreciation for its workers. “The council wants to recognize a city employee every month,” Donnor said. “We’ll ask the department heads to submit an employee to the committee and tell why that employee should be employee of the month.” The subcommittee, which includes Aldermen Larry Wolf, Jerry Ponder and David Sparks, will then select the honoree. The City Council approved the measure at Monday night’s meeting. Donnor said January’s Employee of the Month will be announced at the February meeting. At the end of the year, he added, “We want to pick one member of the 12 and have an employee of the year.” “We really have good city employees who have stood by us through thick and thin,” Donnor said, noting that the committee also would like to start rewarding employees with service pins for years worked. “This is just to give them a little recognition and a pat on the back.” Donnor thanked Darla Huie, owner of Dizzy’s. “I appreciate what Mrs. Huie is doing by donating two dinners each month. It is really nice of her,” he said, adding, “The community always steps up and helps us out.” In other matters, the council on Monday night approved an ordinance amending Ordinance 68 of 2005, outlining another way to make sewer connections outside the city limits. The new ordinance allows Terry McKinney, general manager of the utility department, to request, on an individual basis, that the City Council pass a resolution authorizing the sewer connection. This measure would not require that the city and the potential customer execute a pre-annexation agreement, as the original ordinance requires. Following the approval of that ordinance, which is in effect immediately because it was declared an emergency, the council approved a resolution to allow a sewer connection. Sewer service will be connected to properties at 7206 Alcoa Road, 7120 Alcoa Road and 1049 Elenore Road. The council also approved the following: •A resolution authorizing the mayor to submit a grant application to the state of Arkansas for renovations of the Benton Senior Activity Center. •A resolution ordering that the 30-day time frame abatement set forth in Resolution No. 51 of 2007 be extended to 120 days for abatement of a condemned structure owned by Castle Properties LLC. •A resolution authorizing the exchange of certain real property to complete the Kenwood Street addition. |
