Elementary students across Saline County  celebrated their 100th day of school on Friday, including the kindergarten class of Salem Elementary in Bryant.

“We have an all-day celebration for the kindergarten students’ 100th day,” said Salem Elementary Assistant Principal Jeanette Turner. “The kindergarten students work hard in class all year long and they really have been excited to have this celebration.”
The 100th day celebration day is a tradition at Salem Elementary and many other elementary schools across the nation. The celebration gives the students a chance to show their teachers and parents what they have learned in their schools with activities that help them count all they way to 100.
“In kindergarten we really work hard on learning our numbers and how to count,” said Amberlyn Warford, kindergarten teacher at Salem. “We start the school year counting the days and the 100th Day is very special to them. They have been so excited that when we got to the 50th day, they started talking about it  and have been talking about it every day. In fact, half of the students couldn’t rest during nap time because they were so excited to get back to the activities.”
One major activity of the day included students sharing 100 items brought from home to the school and using those items to decorate posters, hats or other other items the teachers provided.
“The kids made a crown and decorated it with 100 items,” said Warford. “They also brought 100 items from home to share with the other children. They were all very excited to bring their 100 objects to show their friends.”
The day is about letting the children have fun, yet it also helps the students with their math and art skills. The students can also sharpen other skills, such as language or reading comprehension, when teachers have the students read 100 books throughout the day.
“This kids really get into it,” said Shane Haas, president of the Salem Parent Teacher Organization. “The activities they are doing today shows them the value of 100.”
Last year the teachers made a cake for the children to celebrate the 100th day, said Warford. This year the teachers and the students teamed up to bake cupcakes.
“We all worked together to make these cupcakes,” said Warford. “The children helped measure and decorate. They really got involved and that is what we wanted to accomplish with this project.”
Warford said that the students will continue to work on their counting exercises and projects in the following weeks to ensure they are learning number sets.
“Some of my students said this is the best day ever,” said Deb Phillips, kindergarten teacher at Salem. “They are all excited to share their 100 items with the other students. They have worked really hard on their projects and they have a lot of things to take home with them.”
