Program strives to keep local seniors active E-mail

Central Arkansas Development Council will offer a program to help keep older adults active.
Active Living Every Day classes will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Benton Senior Activity Center.

Active Living Every Day is a behavior change program, with focus on helping sedentary adults fit physical activity into their lives in realistic ways, said Sherry Parsons, director of the senior center.
The program is based on research that has resulted in two discoveries about physical activity and health. Physical activity doesn’t need to be strenuous or time-consuming to benefit health, Parson said.
Accumulating 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on most days of the week can result in significant health benefits, she said.
People are more likely to become and stay physically active when taught appropriate lifestyle skills, she said.
Active Living Every Day puts emphasis on personalizing physical activity programs that are appealing and alternative to traditional fitness programs.
According to statistics, more than 60 percent of Americans don’t get enough physical activity and 25 percent are sedentary. Most are aware of the benefits of physical activity but have problems maintaining traditional exercise programs.
The program is free and includes class participation, a book for the program and access to additional support through the program’s Web site and online study guide.
More information is available by contacting Parsons at 315-0645.
