By Jillian Duke Courier Staff The time is nearing for those in Saline County with political plans in mind to make their intentions formal. Filing periods begin next week, and filing fees vary depending on the position.
The filing period for Democratic and Republican candidates begins Monday and continues through Monday, March 10. Those interested in running for a position in Saline County as a Democrat will need to complete paperwork and pay the filing fee, Carl Frank, county Democratic Central Committee chairman, said. Candidates will file on the first floor of the courthouse at 200 N. Main St. in Downtown Benton. Frank said representatives from the county Democratic Committee will be available from noon to 2 p.m. Monday; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, March 7; and 10 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Monday, March 10. Their job is to accept completed paperwork from the candidate and accept the filing fee, Frank said. They then will write a receipt that the candidate will take to the county clerk’s office to complete the process. Representatives also will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce, 607 North Market St. Filing fees for Democratic candidates are as follows: •$1,500 for sheriff and county judge •$1,200 for assessor, collector, circuit clerk, county clerk and treasurer •$450 for coroner and surveyor •$300 for justice of the peace •$100 for constable •$20 for central committee member. Filing fees for Republican candidates are as follows: •$2,000 for sheriff and county judge •$1,500 for assessor, collector, circuit clerk, county clerk and treasurer •$300 for coroner, surveyor and justice of the peace •$100 for constable •$25 for precinct committee member. For Republican candidates, filing will take place at Saline County Republican Headquarters, 125 N. Market St. in Downtown Benton. “On March 3, we are open at noon until 4 p.m.,” Saline County party Chairman Rick Meyer said. The Republican headquarters will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, March 7. Candidates will be able to complete the proper paperwork from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, March 10. “We’ll have representatives there to help them with their paperwork,” Meyer said. “Once they complete it, we’ll give them a receipt to take to the county clerk’s office where they’ll sign a pledge, and then the county clerk’s office will do its work so the candidates can be off and running.”
