County hopefuls file for office E-mail

A number of local candidates made their intentions official Monday on the opening day of the political filing period.


Several unopposed incumbents were among the candidates who filed for Saline County offices. A few local people filed for state offices.
The filing period continues today through Friday and ends Monday.
County candidates must file with their respective parties before filing with the county clerk’s office.
The primary election is Tuesday, May 20. That also is the day Circuit Court judgeships will be determined unless there is a runoff that would extend a race to the Nov. 4 general election.
The primary runoff election, if necessary, will be Tuesday, June 10.
Robert Herzfeld of Benton filed Monday for the newly created Division 4 circuit judgeship, a nonpartisan position. Herzfeld, 34, is the former Saline County prosecuting attorney.
State Rep. Lamont Cornwell, 60, of Benton filed Monday for re-election in District 28.
Cornwell, a Democrat, is serving his first term. He has been in the news concerning a mileage report he submitted to the state following a trip to Wyoming for a conference.
Several candidates filed Monday for the Arkansas House District 29 seat being vacated by Rep. Janet Johnson, D-Bryant.
The District 29 candidates who filed are Republicans Ann Clemmer, 49, of the Salem area and J. Brett Hooton, 24, of Bryant and Democrat Scott Smith, 34, of Bryant.
Following are candidates who filed Monday for county offices:

Democrats

Sheriff — Bruce Pennington, 56, Benton.
County Clerk — Incumbent Freddy Burton, 60, Benton.
Circuit Clerk — Incumbent Doug Kidd, 61, Benton.
County Assessor — Incumbent Jim Crawford, 55, Benton.
County Collector — Incumbent Chris Villines, 37, Benton.
County Treasurer — Incumbent Sandra McPherson, 49, near Benton.
County Coroner — Incumbent Will Bearden, ??, Benton.
Justice of the Peace — District 10, incumbent Jerry Landreth, ??, Traskwood.

Republicans

Sheriff — James Ward, 31, Alexander.
County Surveyor — Aaron Rasburry, ??, Lonsdale.
Justice of the Peace — District 1, incumbent Pat Bisbee, ??, Hensley; District 4, incumbent Barbara Howell, 59, Lake Norrell; District 5, Allan M. Dabbs, 37, Bryant; District 8, incumbent Granville “Buster” Warrick, Benton; and District 12, Brandi Davis, 31, Bauxite.
Constable — District 2, Art Copeland, ??, Mabelvale, and District 12, Gene Gentry, ??, Alexander.

Independents

Justice of the Peace — District 4, Michael Goodwin, ??, Alexander, and District 12, incumbent J.R. Walters, ??, Alexander.

Local Democratic candidates may file with party officials on the first floor of the courthouse in Downtown Benton. Hours are 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-11:50 a.m. Monday.
Democratic Central Committee representatives also will be available from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce, 607 N. Market St.
Local Republican candidates may file with party officials at the party headquarters at 125 N. Market St. in Downtown Benton. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and Monday.
