Ordinances related to housing fees and development were approved by the Benton City Council on Monday night.
Aldermen agreed to suspend the rules and approve the ordinances on the required three readings. First approved was an ordinance waiving construction-related fees for houses constructed by the Central Arkansas Planning and Development District. All building permit fees, inspection fees, stormwater fees and demolition permit fees for the construction and/or rehabilitating of properties by the Central Arkansas Planning and Development District for the Ralph Bunche Community will be waived, according to the ordinance. The planning district is a nonprofit corporation of the state to promote economic development and other services. A similar ordinance was approved in relation to homes built by the Housing Authority of the city of Benton. The ordinance waives the construction-related fees for 10 houses that will be built in the vicinity of Jefferson and Maple streets. The waiver applies only to properties that are utilizing funds obtained from a HUD Home grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The council also approved the following measures: •An ordinance extending the one-year moratorium on outdoor commercial advertising signs. The city formed a committee last year to establish rules regarding outdoor advertising signs within the city. The committee requested the moratorium extension by three months to complete its work. •An ordinance accepting streets and utilities for maintenance of Phase 3 of Hidden Meadows subdivision. Mayor Rick Holland and Aldermen Charles Cunningham and Jerry Ponder were not at the meeting because they are attending a National League of Cities conference this week in Washington, D.C. Sitting in for Holland was Alderman Doug Stracener.
