Courier Staff Ann Sanders of Bryant, who served eight years on the City Council, has announced as a Republican candidate for Saline County judge. Sanders, 45, said she is a conservative Christian and identifies with Republican Party views and values.
She is president of the Humane Society of Saline County and said she wants “positive changes” for the county. “I want to run our county government more efficiently, encourage economic growth, enhance the county recycling program, and make sure we are well prepared for a manmade or natural disaster,” Sanders said. She will be opposed in the May 20 primary by County Judge Lanny Fite, who is seeking his sixth term. Sanders has been a county resident for more than 30 years. She is a management project analyst for the Arkansas Department of Labor, where she has been employed for more than 27 years. She served six years in the Army Reserves. While on the Bryant council, she was instrumental in starting an animal shelter for the city. She was recently named a 2007 Nonprofit Executive of the Year finalist in the Arkansas Business of the Year awards. Sanders said she understands the duties facing a county judge. “The judge is the chief executive officer of county government,” she said. “Most people think of the county judge as being in charge of the roads. “Roads are very important, but the county judge also approves the disbursement of county funds, administers county ordinances, accepts federal, state and private grants, and presides at the meetings of the Quorum Court. I have the experience to handle those duties as well as see that we have the best roads.” Sanders said her Republican values include “keeping taxes low and running government as efficiently as possible. I believe people know how to spend their money better than government does, so those in government have a moral obligation to provide the best government services possible for the least amount of money.” Last year, Sanders was appointed interim director of Bryant’s animal shelter. She is a 1981 graduate of Bryant High School. She attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and majored in business at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She has served as a Girl Scout troop leader. She has two daughters, Elizabeth Ann, a Bryant High School senior and taekwondo instructor, and Amanda, a Bryant High sophomore. Sanders credits her parents with her interest in seeking public office. Her father, the late Dr. Jerry R. Moss, and her mother, Agnes Moss of Bryant, encouraged her to serve as a page for the Arkansas Legislature.
