Courier Staff Saline County could have its first information technology specialist as soon as today, County Judge Lanny Fite said.
The Quorum Court on Tuesday night authorized a $41,000 annual salary for the position. Fite said this morning that he had a final interview scheduled today with a man who lives in the Benton area and is currently an IT specialist with the federal court system in Little Rock. “We actually have offered the job and I hope to hear today whether this gentleman will accept it,” Fite said. “He lives in this area and I like the fact that by working in the court system, he has a knowledge of government.” The IT specialist will be responsible for the maintenance of the county’s computer system. “This position will really save the county money,” Fite said. “Right now, if we have a computer problem, we have to contract with a company to come in at a cost of $90 per hour. That can get expensive.” The county has about 175 computers plus servers, Fite said. The office for the IT specialist will be “somewhere in the courthouse” in Downtown Benton, Fite said. “But this person will be out of the office a lot more than in it,” Fite added. “We have computers in a lot of places — the sheriff’s office, the courthouse annex, the jail, the county offices out on Edison Avenue, the road department.”
In other business, the Quorum Court added the following roads: White Oak Pond Drive extension, Autumn Oak Drive, Oak Valley Drive, Rim Stone Drive extension, Mill Grinder Lane and Mill Stone Cove. Justices of the Peace approved the following appropriations: •$15,000 from emergency warning system radios purchased through a voluntary county tax. •$1,454 reimbursement to the sheriff’s office for training classes. •$11,300 to the tax assessor’s office for data entry fees, office supplies and more.
