Benton police Code Enforcement Officer Bobby Shell loads a bag of trash into a city truck Monday. Shell was watching over some teens fulfill their court-orderd community service requirements, and the city received a free cleanup in various areas because of their service. City officials aren’t condoning the actions of numerous teenagers, but the situation turned out well Monday for the city of Benton.
The teens fulfilled court-ordered community service requirements by cleaning up city streets. Code Enforcement Officers Bobby Shell and Jody Morphew watched over the youths as they filled bags with trash. “We’re cleaning up Benton today,” Shell said. The group covered parts of River Street, East Longhills Road, Congo Road, Military Road and Benton Parkway. The teens were ordered to do community service work after being cited for various offenses, officials said. Working with the teens is a good experience, Shell said. Most important, he added, “They’re learning not to throw trash out the window.” Code enforcement operates within the Benton Police Department. Sgt. Kevin Russell commended the officers’ efforts. “Officer Shell and Officer Morphew continue to help beautify the city by using every available resource at their disposal to help with cleanups,” Russell said. “This is just one example, using juveniles who have to do community service.” Prisoners also are used to help clean up the city, Shell said. In other news, Benton’s code enforcement department has joined the Arkansas Code Enforcement Council, which helps Benton network with code enforcement divisions around the state. Shell also is working on implementing an adopt-a-street program and establishing a citizen’s academy for code enforcement, he said.
