Benton softball opening re-set for Monday E-mail
Tuesday, 01 April 2008

The opening ceremony of the Benton Softball Association has been rescheduled for next week.

The ceremony, which would have kicked off the first games of the season, was supposed to have taken place Monday at Tyndall Park, but was postponed because of inclement weather. The activities originally planned will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
“We were disappointed when the parks department canceled tonight,” Sherry Loibner with the association said. “But we’ll resume all activities on April 7.”
The event will introduce the Benton girls league softball teams, made up of girls ages 4-10. Mayor Rick Holland will throw the first pitch, and the newest member of the Benton Softball Hall of Fame will be introduced.
Susie Everett will emcee the event, and the event co-sponsor, the Benton Parks Department, will provide free hot dogs and drinks. Other activities include face painting and a children’s area for girls to play in when they’re not playing softball.
The ceremony is important, Loibner said, because “we want to get more girls involved in softball and show them it’s fun.”
While softball has been played in Benton for many years, the association began meeting this February. There are about 40 members now, consisting of parents, grandparent, coaches and sponsors, Loibner said.
The Benton league comprises 17 teams, she said. The Benton association is part of the Saline County league made up of 54 teams from Benton, Bryant, Haskell, Salem and Sardis.
