a plant flat at Cox Family Gardens in Benton is home to a robin and her four eggs, By Melissa Walls Courier StaffAround Saline County, the signs of spring continue to blossom. Allen D. Russell of 1715 Melrose Drive in Benton noticed a robin’s nest in an old bell in his backyard on April 3.
It has two blue eggs in it, and the mother is in full attendance, watching every move Russell makes when he goes out his back door, he said. Bobby and Susie Cox, owners of Cox Family Gardens in Benton, noticed a robin trying to make a nest in a hanging basket two weeks ago. They shook the basket and out came the partial nest. The next day, the robin had made her nest in a plant flat at the entrance, and the Coxes decided to let her stay. After a customer wanted to buy the flat where she had made the second nest, they transferred the nest to another flat. She usually flies off when customers come in the entrance, but she comes back quickly, the Coxes said. Susie Cox got some advice on caring for the robin from her granddaughter, 5-year-old Payton Fleeman of Benton. “Nanny, water all the plants, but don’t get the bird nest wet and don’t sweep so loud,” Payton told her grandmother. Payton is the daughter of Christy and Michael Fleeman. |
