Sawyer sends Bryant soaring over Charging Wildcats E-mail
Thursday, 24 April 2008

Tyler Sawyer did it all on Wednesday—all in the seventh inning.

He towed the mound for the Bryant Hornets in the seventh inning in much-needed relief and delivered the walk-off hit in a 5-4 win over the North Little Rock Charging Wildcats.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh and two on, Sawyer took a pitch deep over the Charging Wildcat center fielder’s head pushing David Guarno in from third base.
The Hornets, down 2-1, scored three runs in the sixth inning, but could not get the three outs necessary to nail down the win. North Little Rock tied the score at four setting up Sawyer’s walk-off heroics.
The significance of Wednesday’s win may not be felt until the conference schedule plays out a bit more. The psychological impact, though, according to head coach Terry Harper, may be felt immediately.
“Not really sure where that puts us in the race b/c there are so many
teams that have so many make up games,” Harper said. “To win a game like that is huge.
“That could go along way in our confidence and emotional intensity
through the state tournament. Hopefully we are getting back on track after a bad stretch of about four games.”
“The kids kept fighting and our pitchers kept us close to allow us a chance in the seventh,” Harper added.
Jordan Knight, Cody Walker, Trent Daniel and Jake Jackson each had two hits. Knight also scored a pair of runs, but Harper said Sawyer’s seventh inning heroics might be felt for games to come.
“Sawyer’s seventh inning hit was huge for our team and for his confidence,” Harper said. “Trent and Tyler both did a good job on the mound for us. I was very proud of the guys and winning like that made me feel like a kid again, and hopefully it showed our guys that this game is suppose to be fun.”
