Members of the West Bauxite Baptist Church Youth Fellowship donate $855 for the Saline County Relay for Life. Kneeling on the grass are, from left, Brent Armstrong, Jaylynn Chitwood, Becky Chism, Ashley McCarty, Jesse Hyde, Drew Chitwood, Sara Armstrong and Lucas Hyde. Presenting the check to Relay committee member Lisa Thornton, standing second from left, is Mark Wise, a Sunday School teacher at the church. Next to Thornton are Dale Jenkins, regional president of Summit Bank, and Tiffany Mahan, branch manager for Summit Bank on Arkansas 35 North.

The donation was made in memory of Virginia Harper, who was a member of the church and died earlier this year.
The money was raised during a February bowl-a-thon and will be included in the total amount raised for the local Relay, which will benefit the American Cancer Society. The event will be held from 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, to 6 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Benton High School Practice Field.
Lisa Thornton, who’s in charge of team recruitment for this year’s fund-raiser, said she’s “thankful” for the youth.
“It’s a real good feeling to work with the American Cancer Society in this event, Relay for Life, the greatest walk on earth,” she said.
Thornton encourages people to “celebrate the survivors, walk for the fighters, for yourself, for your loved one and for those who walk no more. Walk whether you’re a fighter, survivor or supporter.”
She added that the event will include refreshments, games, entertainment, clowns and more.
Each team participating in the noncompetitive event will try to keep at least one member on the track throughout the night, symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.
Additional information about forming a team or the event is available by calling Thornton, community relations representative for Summit Bank, at 776-3111.
