The Courier news staff has teamed to win the General Excellence Award in the annual Arkansas Associated Press Managing Editors journalism contest.
The award is one of the highest bestowed upon a newspaper in its division, along with the Sweepstakes Award. Courier staff members won nine other awards in addition to General Excellence. Awards were announced Saturday night during the annual APME convention, which was held this year at the Red Apple Inn in Heber Springs. “This is obviously a tremendous honor that is possible because of the efforts of a staff of dedicated professionals who take their roles seriously as community daily newspaper journalists,” said Whit Jones, Courier editor. “This entire staff works with a passion, both for the profession and for the readers we serve. I could not be more proud and humbled for us all at the Courier.” Following are the other awards won by current Courier staff members: News Story — Jones, first place, and Lynda Hollenbeck, associate editor, third place. News Coverage — Jillian Duke, reporter, second place. Education Reporting — Jillian Duke, second place. Sports Story — Ricky Duke, sports editor, first place. Sports Feature Story — Ricky Duke, second place. Headline Writing — Staff, first place, and Jones, third place. Former staff member Robert Shearon won second place for a human interest column. The Courier also enters the Arkansas Press Association journalism contest each year. The results of that contest have not yet been announced. The APA’s annual convention is in the summer. The Courier competes among smaller daily newspapers. Other General Excellence Ward winners in their divisions are the Log Cabin Democrat at Conway and The Morning News at Springdale.
