Benton Junior High School has been selected as a winner of a $10,000 grant from the Goody’s Good Deeds for Schools program.
The school will use the grant to purchase new books for the school library. The Good Deeds for Schools grant program awards $10,000 grants to 50 schools for things the schools need but cannot afford through normal education funding. Helping the school win the grant were Michael Mills, secondary curriculum coordinator for literacy, and Suzy Carter, sponsor of the Peer Leadership class at the junior high. The Peer Leadership students coordinated an original skit on why the school should receive the grant, said Christie Schade, library media specialist at the junior high school. “We also let the students decide on how to spend the money, and they decided it should be spent on books,” Schade said. Schade added that more than 1,000 schools applied from around the nation, and Benton Junior High was one of three finalists in Arkansas. “But we were the only school in Arkansas that won. “It’s really been exciting. I’ve never won anything like this.” Schade said she will be weeding out old books to make room for the new ones. “We will get various kinds of books from low-level to help students who struggle with reading to advanced books,” she said. “We’re also going to improve our reference section with the grant.” With headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn., Goody’s is a retailer that specializes in moderately priced family apparel. In addition to Arkansas, Goody’s operates in 19 other states mainly in the southeast United States.
