Habitat application day June 14 E-mail
Thursday, 05 June 2008
For those thinking about having a home of their own through Habitat for Humanity, there’s only one day to make those intentions known.
The annual application day event for the Saline County affiliate will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at First United Methodist Church on North Market Street in Downtown Benton.
Those interested in applying for a Habitat house must attend this once-a-year event to receive an application. Information also will be presented about Habitat for Humanity, the application process, who can qualify for a home, the requirements for a Habitat home and other related topics.
Prospective applicants also will have a chance to ask questions and meet some of the Saline County affiliate’s staff and volunteers. Forms will be distributed and help will be available in filling out applications.
Last year, the fourth annual application day event drew more than 40 families interested in Habitat’s affordable housing, said Karma Herzfeld, executive director of the local affiliate. Of those who applied, four families were selected, and one of the families has already begun construction on their home. Three more homes will be completed by the end of this year, she said.
There’s room for more families, Herzfeld noted. Habitat plans to build eight homes this year and nine next year. Since 1999, 27 homes have been built for Saline County families.
All of the current homes are being built in Habitat’s Partnership Village on West Woodlawn in Benton. The subdivision is on a 12-acre site. When completed, the area will comprise 65 homes.
This week, activity has been high at Partnership Village as the third annual Homebuilders Blitz Week has been taking place. Professional homebuilders have come together to build a home for Rachel Blazer and her son, Joshua. The homebuilders have been donating time, building materials and subcontractor services.
Other businesses and individuals have been volunteering by providing meals and beverages for the workers.
Habitat is partnering with Bosley Construction to build the house in just five days, Herzfeld said. A dedication ceremony will be held at the site at 5 p.m. Friday to honor the volunteers and to bless the new Habitat home and family.
