James A. Bearden, 81, of Malvern died Sunday, June 15, 2008, after a long illness. He was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Benton. Mr. Bearden was a member of Third Baptist Church, a past member of the Odd Fellows, an Army veteran and a licensed psychiatric technician nurse for 35 years before retiring. He worked at Benton Services Center. He was preceded in death by his first wife; three children; his parents; and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Bearden; a daughter, Brenda Stevens and husband Richard of Marietta, Ga.; two sons, Ronnie Bearden and wife Phyllis of Benton and Paul Bearden and wife Darla of Union City, Tenn.; four stepchildren, Betty Hight of Wasilla, Alaska, Edward Cornell and wife Teresa of Royal, Linda Bettis and husband Gary of Malvern and Deborah Cornell of Hot Springs; a brother, Riley Bumgardner of Fort Smith; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Social Hill Cemetery by Regency Funeral Home in Malvern. The Rev. Jim Freeman officiated in a private family service. Pallbearers were David Cornell, Jimmy Powell, Jeff Bearden, David Gullett, Ed Cornell, Gary Bettis, Richard Stevens, Ronnie Patterson and Nick Merchant. Memorials may be made to the Malvern Senior Center or the Hot Spring County Library.
