Abby the Tabby is Humane Society’s pet of week E-mail
Thursday, 19 June 2008
This week the society is featuring Abby the Tabby, an adorable homeless kitten, recently brought to the society shelter.
Abby is one of more than 50 kittens the shelter has taken in during the past month. The Humane Society of Saline County is celebrating the American Humane Association’s national Adopt-a-Cat M.
When cats are not neutered or spayed, they easily reproduce and spring and summer is the time of year when cats are more active, resulting in more kittens showing up at the shelter.
Last week, the Humane Society took in more than 30 animals. People are encouraged to have  their pets spayed or neutered.
While the shelter has been flooded with kittens, most will not be available for another week. Many were sick and all of them must be neutered before being adopted.
A large number of cats and kittens will be available for the society’s first evening adoption event. The “Moonlight Cat Adoption Event” will be held from 6:30 to 9 on Friday, June 27.
The event will be at the shelter at 7600 Bauxite Highway in Bauxite.
Normal adoption hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
The adoption fee for cats is $65. All cats adopted at the shelter also will be current on shots and wormer. The adoption fee helps pay for the animal’s medical expenses.
Area residents are reminded about the society’s Smarty Cats Summer Reading Program. A special reading room is set up where people may relax and read books to the cats. There has been a great response so far.
Numerous books were purchased from the ASPCA for this program. The cats enjoy people’s company.
Consider sending in a donation and sponsoring one of the 50 animals that need to be spayed or neutered. Donations may be made on the society's Web site, www.hssaline.org, or mailed to the Humane Society, P.O. Box 305, Benton, AR 72018.
For questions, call the shelter at 557-5518 during operating hours.

Ann Sanders is president of the Humane Society of Saline County. Pet of the Week will be featured each Thursday.
