Filing period shorter for school candidates E-mail
Monday, 07 July 2008
School board candidates in Saline County will have a briefer period for circulating their required positions this year.
The filing period runs from Friday, July 11, through noon Friday, July 18.
The filing deadline is 60 days prior to the school board elections, which are held 15 days earlier than the filing deadline of previous years, Dan Farley, executive director of the Arkansas School Boards Association, said.
“All of this was changed by the Arkansas General Assembly,” Farley noted.
Darlene Westbrook, a deputy in the county clerk’s office, said two positions will be open this year on the Benton School Board, which is a seven-member panel. Terms are expiring for Andy Bloxom, the current president, and Amy Daniel, who has served nearly two decades on the board.
In Bryant, the term is expiring for President  David Passmore, and in Bauxite, Howard Kitchens’ term is expiring.
In the Harmony Grove district, voters will determine who will occupy the position currently held by Charles “Buck” Burchfield, who was elected last year to an unexpired term for Tracy Jackson, who resigned.
Candidates must obtain the signatures of at least 20 registered voters on their petitions which must be submitted to the county clerk’s office.
All of the open positions are five-year terms.
