‘Social’ events set for July 24 |

Old-fashioned ice cream social among activities
Downtown Benton will be abuzz Thursday, July 24, with an old-fashioned ice cream social, coordinator Lisa Baldwin announced.
Activities — which are plentiful — will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 8:30 p.m., Baldwin said.
She said a variety of family-fun activities are on schedule for the event that will take place on two blocks of streets that will be closed to provide safety and room for residents to enjoy the summertime fun.
Sevier Street will be closed between Market and Main streets in front of the Saline County Courthouse for “inflatable fun for children,” Baldwin said.
“Market Street will be closed between Sevier and South streets to display antique automobiles by the Dixie Car Club,” she said.
Bluegrass music will be performed on Market Street by local artists, including the dueling fiddles of Ricky Tripp and Joe Snell.
“While supplies last, free ice cream will be served on the streets,” Baldwin said.
“Several restaurants will provide dinner specials with outdoor dining, including the newly relocated Darlin’s Cafe, now located in the former Market Street Events Center.”
An outdoor art show and sale will be set up in front of Dianne Roberts Art Studio & Gallery on Market Street.
Other non-retail businesses will provide additional fun with face-painting and temporary hair color for kids at Shear Impressions Hair Salon.
The Central Arkansas Development Council will host a “bubble bonanza” with additional children’s activities at Owens-Rainey Memorial Park at the corner of Main and South streets.
The Humane Society of Saline County will provide a special petting and adoption area at the event, where many dogs and cats will be available to visit with and adopt. Pony rides also will be available, Baldwin said.
The Farmers Market will be open to sell fresh local produce, she added.
Live theater will highlight the event with the Royal Players’ opening-night performance of Bye Bye Birdie. The show will begin at 7 p.m. and tickets will go on sale at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for children, $12 for general admission $10 for seniors and $8 for groups of 15 or more. Admission is free to the ice cream social, Baldwin said, and all children’s activities are free except for a one-time $3 fee per child for the inflatable fun.
