Flooding among issues for special meeting E-mail
Tuesday, 15 July 2008
Relief update expected tonight Bryant City Council members are expected to consider a number of issues, including flooding, in a special meeting set for 6 p.m. today at Boswell Municipal Complex at Bryant.
Fire Chief Randy Cox plans to update the council and Mayor Larry Mitchell on the status of flooding issues in Bryant. After severe storms in April caused major damage in the city, Cox was named the Operation Flood Relief incident commander and has taken steps to help alleviate those problems.
After a heavy rain on July 4th threatened to flood numerous homes in certain areas of Bryant, Cox once again was asked to resume emergency status to take care of the problems.
“Much has been accomplished since May and you can see that,” Cox said. “As of this Monday, Operation Flood Relief again will be in full force. Every department will be used again in order to complete new projects and assist with projects waiting on materials.”
Representatives of McClelland Consulting Engineers Inc. of Little Rock also will talk to the council on the status of replacing box culverts on the Arkansas 5 bridge near Larry’s Pizza.
A study by FTN and Associates in Little Rock, an environmental consulting firm hired in 2007 to help find solutions to flooding issues, determined the Arkansas 5 bridge was a major piece to alleviating the problems. Bryant Public Work Director Richard Penn said all the other projects in the plan are impacted by this bridge.
McClelland was hired in April 2008 to design a plan to replace the culverts. Representatives of the company have said these plans have been submitted to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department for approval.
Monty Ledbetter, superintendent of the Bryant water and wastewater departments, also will present an update of a study involving manholes; Alderman Ken Green is expected to discuss a capital project funding with the Bryant street department; and Bryant Planning Commission Coordinator LaVenia Jones is expected to discuss a a pre-annexation agreement with Alcoa Inc. regarding a donation of land near the Saline County Regional Airport off Reynolds Road.
Bryant aldermen are Rick Meyer, Steve Gladden, Steve Glenn, Larry Smart, Robby Young, Green, Danny Steele and Chris Tipton.
All council meetings are open to the public. The mayor presides in the sessions.
