Anyone up for a good movie? E-mail
Friday, 18 July 2008
MySaline’s Russell schedules movie at Tyndall Park Shelli Russell of Benton can be seen at nearly all city and county meetings recording voices and faces on her high-tech phone and then posting them on MySaline.com.
She started the networking Web site to bring together community residents who otherwise may never connect. Now, Russell is taking a break from the hot-button issues, such as annexation and animal control, and offering a night of pure abandonment.
The first Movie in the Park event sponsored by MySaline.com will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Tyndall Park in Benton.
“The Wizard of Oz” will show at the Juli Busken Amphitheater at 8:30 following a live music performance by Mike Dollins Band of Benton. The band will begin performing at 7.
Admission is free.
“My husband and I like movies, and I think it’d be cool for people to get together and see old movies,” Russell said. “Everyone quotes their favorite movies. We even had a movie quote game on MySaline that lasted for days.”
People can come to the park and experience the old movie with their families, visit with friends and maybe even meet new people, Russell said. “Once you experience things with other people in the community, my theory is you come closer to your community.
“I fully expect a couple of people to be singing ‘Lollypop Guild’ and maybe someone will stand up and sing.”
Tyndall Park sponsored a movie in the park event last year, Russell noted, “but they’re not doing it this year, so I thought, ‘here’s my chance.’”
Russell said ice chests will not be allowed in the park. She said people are encouraged to bring their own chairs to set up in the amphitheater. “The concrete steps are big enough for chairs.”
A concession stand will be there for people who’d like to eat. Free items will be available from one vendor who will give away popcorn and another who will provide water, Russell said.
Various vendors also will be set up in the park. “One guy will be selling motorcycle accessories, and one woman will do Henna tattoos (nonpermanent). There will be a representative from Pulaski Tech to inform people about the new location at the county line. The usual — Pampered Chef, Avon, Cookie Lee jewelry — will be there, in addition to representatives of the Boys & Girls Club of Saline County.”
On whether more movie events will follow, Russell said she’d like to see how this first one goes. She said even if this first event is a success, it may not happen again until next year. “There are so many other events going on. Football will be starting and Staycation is coming up.”
Staycation is a family event planned over Labor Day weekend.
But Russell is focused on next Saturday’s event right now. “It’s a local event, there’s free parking and it’s a great park, so bring your chairs and sit back to watch a classic with your family and friends,” she said.
MySaline.com has grown to about 600 members, Russell said. “Hopefully, after this event more people will know about it and get involved because MySaline.com in and of itself brings people together.”
