Residents from several areas that Benton and Bryant would like to annex are joining forces and meeting together for the first time on Saturday.
The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church, 1647 Salem Road. The purpose of the meeting is to encourage everyone to fight against annexation, said Joy Buchanan, who lives off Northshore Drive in Benton. Buchanan lives in the area that’s part of Benton’s island annexation proposal. That proposal does not require a vote of the people. The City Council will vote on whether to annex the Northshore Drive area. The annexation proposal also includes parts of Alcoa Road and includes the Almatis plant. The council had approved an Aug. 12 special election on the annexation of areas north and west of Hurricane Lake Estates, which would have have included the North Lake area and Salem community. Last week, however, the council voted to cancel the planned special election in response to objections of Salem community residents who objected to becoming part of an incorporated area. Then, in a special meeting Monday, the council unanimously approved an ordinance calling for an Oct. 14 election to annex only the North Lake area into the city. The area targeted for annexation is the same property Bryant proposes to annex in a Sept. 9 election. If both annexation proposals pass, a third election will be held in which the residents of the affected area will vote to decide which city they wish to be a part of. Buchanan said, “We’re all joining forces to help defeat annexation.” She said she and other organizers encourage people to bring ideas and “work with us to get these defeated.” Additional information concerning the meeting on Saturday may be obtained by calling Charlotte Roberts at 794-0427.
