Vote on historic district planned E-mail
Tuesday, 29 July 2008
Council would create new commission Benton City Council is scheduled tonight to vote on an ordinance creating a historic district commission for the city.
The meeting is set for 7 at Benton Municipal Complex on South East Street.
No objections were raised to creating the commission in a public hearing two weeks ago, and two people spoke in favor of the plan. Favoring the commission are Steve Perdue, curator of the David O. Demuth Arkansas Room at Herzfeld Memorial Library, and Jill Jones, executive director of the Benton Advertising and Promotion Commission.
Jones said such a commission would help the A&P Commission to market the amenities of the district.
Perdue said many of Benton’s buildings are around 100 years old and said preserving the historic appearance of the structure is important.
In other matters tonight, the council is scheduled to recognize Angela Ross, administrative assistant to Benton Mayor Rick Holland, as employee of the month.
The council agenda also includes an ordinance waiving competitive bidding and ratifying contracts with Mid-State Construction Co. for $82,000 in culvert work on Denise Street.
Also on the agenda is a proposed ordinance levying the annual tax on all real and personal property in the city.
All council meetings and council committee meetings are open to the public.
