Council expects letter from Benton outlining its plans
Bryant alderman expect to receive a letter tonight from the Benton City Council’s Economic Development Committee outlining annexation plans in the area of Northshore Drive. The meeting will start at 7 at Boswell Municipal Complex, 210 SW Third St. Benton Mayor Rick Holland told more than 100 people at an annexation meeting in Salem on Saturday that the letter will outline Benton’s intentions for the area of Northlake. Both Benton and Bryant are in dispute over land south of Northlake Road, which borders the Salem community. Both cities claim territorial jurisdiction of the area. Bryant will hold a special annexation election Sept. 9. regarding the areas in question and Benton will hold a special election Oct. 14. If both annexation proposals pass, residents in the Northlake area will vote in a third election to decide whether to annex into Benton or Bryant. However, Holland told citizens on Saturday that if the annexation proposals on the special election ballots fail, he’d like to see everything “go back to voluntary annexation. With the Salem annexation, we bit off more than we can chew.” State Sen. Shane Broadway, D-Bryant, and Eddie Black, president of the Saline County Economic Development Corp., are expected to present the letter to the council on behalf of the SCEDC. The SCEDC was asked by the Benton City Council Economic Development Committee to act as a mediator between the city and area industries. In other business, councilmen are expected to vote tonight on a resolution from Saline County Judge Lanny Fite and the Quorum Court for an inter-local agreement. A letter from Fite said both Bryant and the county have been working on an agreement for a “long time” and he is asking the council to approve the measure. The council will be updated on the status of several ongoing projects in Bryant, including Operation Flood Relief, FTN watershed project and the GIS program. Two ordinances will be presented to ask for rezoning of property on Evans Loop and Hidden Creek. The council also will be asked to approve $22,000 for an entrance into Mills Park. Bryant aldermen are Rick Meyer, Steve Gladden, Steve Glenn, Larry Smart, Robby Young, Green, Danny Steele and Chris Tipton. All council meetings are open to the public.
