Signatures required for candidates who want council seats
The filing period starts Wednesday for those who want to run for office in one of Saline County’s seven municipalities. The period ends at noon Tuesday, Aug. 26. Candidates in Alexander, Bauxite, Haskell, Shannon Hills and Traskwood must receive 10 signatures on their petitions. Candidates in Benton and Bryant must obtain 30 signatures. The only positions voters will decide on in the Nov. 4 general election are City Council positions. Those are two-year termzs, while mayors hold office for four years. Other city offices, such as city clerk and city attorney, also are four-year terms and not up for election this year. Benton City Council has five wards with two positions each. Serving in Ward 1 are Larry Wolf and Greg White; Ward 2, Charles Cunningham and Joe Lee Richards; Ward 3, Bill Donnor and Jerry Ponder; Ward 4, Brad Moore and David Sparks; and Ward 5, Steve Lee and Doug Stracener. Stracener has formally announced that he will seek re-election. Benton resident Scott Hunter has indicated that he will seek Stracener’s seat. Bryant City Council has four wards with two positions each. Serving in Ward 1 are Rick Meyer and Danny Steele; Ward 2, Steve Glenn and Chris Tipton; Ward 3, Larry Smart and Ken Green; and Ward 4, Robby Young and Steve Gladden. In Alexander, there are four wards with two positions each. Serving in Ward 1 are Dortheria Smith and Philip Jones; Ward 2, Daisy Hill and Patricia Jones Croon; Ward 3, Harvey Howard and Michael Huck; and Ward 4, Faye McKeon and Paul Mitchell. Bauxite City Council has five positions. Serving in Position 1 is Ronnie Ramsey; Position 2, Mae Clark; Position 3, Georgia L. Babbitt; Position 4, Deborah Purifoy; and Position 5, Kenneth Anderson. In Haskell, there are four wards, but Ward 3 has only one position. Serving in Ward 1 are Terry Babbs and Ray Bennett; Ward 2, Rose Marie Wilkinson and Tim Finley; Ward 3, Halbert “Hal” Baker; and Ward 4, Gary C. Vice and Dwayne Hippensteel. Shannon Hills City Council has three wards, but Ward 1 has only one position. Serving in Ward 1 is Robin Baker; Ward 2, Toni Cobb and James Smith; and Ward 3, Dr. Dave Holsomback and Diane C. Smith-Everett. Traskwood has four City Council members. Serving in Ward 1 is Linda Berryhill; Ward 2, Eldon Spear and Billy Sharp; and Ward 3, Lloyd Lewis.
