Robert W. Newcomb Sr., 86, of Benton died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008.
He was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Benton.
He was owner of a local contracting company for 33 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Alma Cates Newcomb; a sister, Wilma Simmons; and three brothers, J.C. Newcomb, Rex Newcomb and George Newcomb.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Merie Newcomb; two daughters, Tanai Starrs of Aspen, Colo., and Jerene Newcomb of Fort Smith; a son, Robert W. Newcomb Jr. and wife Teresa of Benton; seven grandchildren, Chris Gayle and wife Brandi of Charlotte, N.C., Andrea Gayle of Charlotte, N.C., Craig Hogan and wife Jennifer of Albuquerque, N.M., Robert W. “Trey” Newcomb III, Trevor Newcomb and Britney and Sara Sidebottom, all of Benton; a brother, Freddie of Benton; and two sister-in-laws, Lorene and Glayds Newcomb, both of Benton.
Funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ashby Funeral Home with the Rev. Eric Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Old Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family comments: Robert died at home under hospice care. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Benton and enjoyed hunting quail and restoring antiques and pottery. He served in the Army 34th combat engineering battalion from October 1942 to December 1945.
