Total damage from Friday fire estimated at $5,500
A Bauxite widow escaped harm but her mobile home suffered extensive damage when a fire broke out Friday morning in the kitchen. Authorities said Rose Ammons of 616 Virginia St. heard a “crackling noise” in the kitchen, went to the kitchen door and left the mobile home when she saw smoke. Ammons took her dog and purse next door to her daughter’s house to call 911, fire officials said. No injuries were reported. Bauxite Fire Chief John Davis said his department received a call at 8:24. Members of the Bryant and Alexander fire departments assisted. The mobile home had an addition, Davis said. He said structural damage is estimated at $3,000. Furniture and other items inside the mobile home suffered fire and smoke damage, Davis said. He estimated damage to personal property at $2,500. Ammons was folding clothes in the living room when she heard the noise from the kitchen, Davis said. “Mrs. Ammons told us that when she left and went to her daughter’s house, she looked back and smoke was billowing out,” Davis said. Mrs. Ammons’ husband died in June, Davis said, and she does not have insurance on the mobile home. Authorities said it took about an hour to extinguish the fire.v
