Joe Felan is a candidate for Position 4 on the Benton School Board.
Felan, 45, is seeking the seat currently held by Andy Bloxom, board president, who did not seek another term. Originally from Texas, Felan grew up in Meridian, a town of about 1,400 people located between Waco and Fort Worth. He holds a Bachelor of Busi-ness Administration degree and a Master of Business Admini-stration degree from Baylor University and a Ph.D. in operations management form the University of South Carolina. Currently, he is serving as interim associate dean of undergraduate studies at University of Arkansas at Little Rock and also teaches the operations class in the executive Master of Business Administration program at UALR. He began teaching in 1993 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., and taught at Baylor University from 1997 to 2002. In the summer of 2002, Felan and his family moved to Benton where he began teaching at UALR. He has taught operations management, quality assurance, service operations management and international business at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. “One of the reasons that I am running for the school board is that education is very important to me,” Felan said. “My wife, Anne, and I are both educators and we have three children in the Benton school system,” he said. Anne Felan teaches at Angie Grant Elementary School, her husband noted. All of the Felans’ children attend Ringgold Elementary School. Nathaniel is 10 and in the fifth grade; Michal is 7 and in the second grade; and Isabelle is 6 and is a first-grader. “I have spent a lot of time volunteering at Ringgold Elementary and this [school board] is another way for me to volunteer,” Felan said. “I have volunteered in the school district as part of the Junior Achievement Pro-gram,” he said. He serves on the board of directors for Saline County District of Junior Achievement. “I have also been a part of the Watch DOGS program at Ringgold, and furthermore, I have been a college professor for 15 years and I hope to use some of my experience to help the local school district.” The school election will take place Sept. 16. Early voting is scheduled Sept. 9-15.
