Bryant Fire Chief Randy Cox is expected tonight to update the Bryant City Council on the status of Operation Flood Relief, which is designed to rid the city of flooding issues.
The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at Boswell Municipal Complex, 210 SW Third St. Residents of Bryant have complained for more than 10 years about flooding issues in particular neighborhoods, but major flooding April 3 and 4 sparked the council and Mayor Larry Mitchell into declaring an emergency situation. Operation Flood Relief was set up and Cox was named the incident commander to oversee the program. Cox and other city employees have worked extra hours and days since April in an attempt to “flood-proof” neighborhoods with “quick fixes” until more permanent measures can be implemented. On Sept. 2, heavy rains from Hurricane Gustav threatened to flood many Bryant neighborhoods again, but Cox said that the efforts of Operation Flood Relief saved homes. “All the measures that we took for Operation Flood Relief worked,” he said. “Some of those are temporary fixes and they aren’t pretty as far as the look, but they worked.” Cox said there were no evacuations and no flooded homes. Damage to five homes in Bryant reportedly came from falling trees and the fire department and street department cleaned up or cut about 42 trees in the city. The council expects to hear the latest updates on how Operation Flood Relief stood up throughout the heavy rains and to learn if more projects are under way. In other business, Bryant Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rae Ann Fields will inform the council about the latest updates on the chamber’s Web site, www.bryant-ar.com. The Web site recently has been updated to provide searchers with quick links to area businesses that are chamber members. “We want to show people in Saline County that they don’t have to travel to other areas to shop because we have it all right here,” said Carrie Roedel with the chamber. “We have a new search by categories for different business; we have the businesses’ information. We have everything from hot deals, to maps, job postings, hours of operation and much more. We want people to use our Web site and see they don’t have to travel out of Bryant to find what they need.” Bryant aldermen are Rick Meyer, Steve Gladden, Steve Glenn, Larry Smart, Robby Young, Green, Danny Steele and Chris Tipton. All council meetings are open to the public. The mayor presides in the sessions.
