Barbara Anne Tarvin, 70, of Benton died Friday Oct. 3, 2008, in Little Rock. She was born Aug. 19, 1938, in Monticello. Mrs. Tarvin was retired from the Arkansas Department of Human Services. She was a charter member of the Royal Players and on the Board of Directors for several years. She was on the board of the Chamber of Commerce, served on the educational committee and was instrumental in bringing UALR to Benton. She was lead volunteer of the Literacy Council and was currently working on a committee to resurrect it. She also was a member of a group called Project Success, working to form a central directory to aid people with addictions and mental illness, and she was an active member of Fitness Unlimited. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer O. and Nina Alderman; and her husband of 53 years, James F. Tarvin. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Lynn Nugent and husband David of Malvern; two sisters, June Smithwick and husband Richard of Monticello and Sheryl Dewey and husband Tim Dewey of San Angelo, Texas; one brother, Billy N. Alderman of Monticello; one grandson, Bryan L. Riggan and wife Andrea of Benton; one granddaughter, Heather N. Boyett and husband Dirk of Malvern; one great-granddaughter, Madison N. Riggan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ashby Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pipkin Cemetery with the Revs. Tim Dewey and John Smithwick officiating. Pallbearers are Tim Brewer, Brian Tarvin, Todd Gunter, Steven Smithwick, David Nugent and Willard Thomas. Honorary pallbearers are Billy M. Alderman, Billy Newton Alderman and David Dewey.
