Hurricane Lake plans community fair E-mail
Sunday, 12 October 2008
Hurricane Lake Estates holds many events throughout the year, but Saturday will mark a first communitywide event.
The Health & Community Fair will be held from noon to 4 p.m. inside the Benton neighborhood. If rain cancels the event, it will take place the same time on Saturday, Oct. 25.
“We decided to plan something for the older generation and then it just grew and grew and became something everyone could participate in,” said Brenda Wells, who serves on the Hurricane Lake Estates Social Committee.
The committee comprises volunteers who meet to plan activities for neighborhood children, Wells said. But, she said, the committee wanted to host something the entire community could enjoy. “We wanted to do something that involved everyone in the surrounding area and not just Hurricane Lake Estates residents.”
Wells said the event continues to “grow daily. People are hearing about it and are now contacting us to participate.”
Admission is free. Activities include health screenings and information, valuable community information and games for children. Among the activities for children, Don the Magic Balloon Man is expected. Children will also be able to have their faces painted and play in the Moon Bounce.
Local police and fire departments are expected to be on hand, in addition to local physicians, health organizations and restaurants, Wells said.
Wells said the committee is “hopeful” this event will be the first and become “an annual event everyone looks forward to.”
Committee members include Bea Malcolm, Pat Pope, Carla Robertson, Gayla Arendt, Dorothy Carpenter, Kathy McCon-nell, Brenda Scrimager and Mary Armstrong. The committee plays hosts to many events, such as an Easter egg hunt, School’s Out Pizza & Pool Party and Back to School Ice Cream Party with Don the Magic Balloon Man.
A yard sale is taking place from 8 a.m. to noon before the community fair kicks off. Cost to participate is $10 per house.
Last spring, 73 houses signed up to participate in the yard sale, she noted.
The Tour of Homes Committee hosts a Christmas Tour of Homes each December. Each year, the committee picks an organization in Saline County to sponsor, Wells said. Last year’s benefit organization was the Bryant Senior Activity Center, and 100 percent of the $4,300 proceeds went to the center.
This year, Tour of Homes will sponsor the center as well as Court Appointed Special Advocates. Plans already are in the works for the event, Wells said. “We currently have five houses on the tour and are hoping to get two more since we have seven door prizes.”
The event is slated for 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7.
Participating organizations and businesses for Saturday community fair include Saline Memorial Hospital, Back & Body Chiropractic, American Cancer Society, Benton Police Department with McGruff the dog and the Panther police car, Longhills Family Densitry, Benton Fire Department with the fire safety house, Joel’s Photography, 24 Athletic Club, Hurricane Golf & Country Club, Crye-Leike Realtors, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Alz-heimer’s Association, Spit for the Cure, American Red Cross, Carson Therapy and Coulter Sleep Center.
