Benton Utilities Commission is seeking applicants to fill the position of Leroy Allen, whose term expires next month.
“It is with sincere regret and appreciation that I have to announce the retirement of Benton Utilities Commissioner Leroy Allen effective Dec. 31, 2008,” Terry McKinney, utilities general manager, said. McKinney said Allen, a former Benton alderman, “has been a tremendous asset to Benton Utilities throughout his tenure bringing many years of experience to the commission. His knowledge and understanding of the day-to-day activities will be enormously missed. He has truly been a friend to Benton Utilities during his tenure on this commission serving the citizens of Benton as a commissioner since 2007.” With Allen’s retirement comes the need to fill his position on the commission, McKinney said, noting the commission is accepting resumés from Benton residents interested in serving. The new commissioner will be appointed by the City Council to fill a position with the expiration date of Dec. 31, 2013, McKinney said. Commissioners must reside in the city of Benton. They serve six years. The commission has management responsibility over the electric distribution, water purification, water distribution, wastewater collections, wastewater treatment plant, administrative services and purchasing departments with regard to long-term planning, personnel requirements and operational needs. There is no salary with the position but expenses incurred in regard to utility business could be reimbursed, McKinney said. Other commissioners include: Chairman Charles Best, whose term expires Dec. 31, 2011; Frank Large, whose term expires Dec. 31, 2012; Jim Martin, whose term expires Dec. 31, 2009; and Phil Miller, whose term expires Dec. 31, 2010. Deadline for response is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12. McKinney asks that résumés or letter of petition be sent to Terry McKinney, Benton Utilities General Manager, 1827 Dale, Benton, AR 72015 or delivered to that address. He will narrow applicants and then the City Council will appoint a candidate.
