Two men accused of the murder of a South Arkansas man are scheduled for a Dec. 16 appearance in Benton District Court.
Jason Taylor, 24, of East End and Bradley Carter, 28, of the Landmark community in Pulaski County are charged with the murder of 28-year-old Derrick Utsey. They were arrested on Nov. 10 and 11. Neither has entered a plea to the charges. Utsey’s body was found Oct. 15 on the Hensley Mail Route Road and Saline County sheriff’s detectives said Utsey had been dead for more than a day. “He was off in the woods where people had been cutting timber,” Lt. Mike Frost said. “Utsey had been there about 18 hours.” An autopsy by the state Crime Laboratory revealed that Utsey died from a gunshot wound. Frost said Utsey was shot in the head and that detectives are still investigating possible motives for the death. “During the investigation, our detectives received information about the two suspects and we got an arrest warrant on both,” Frost said. “Both were taken in without incident.” Taylor and Carter appeared in Benton District Court on Nov. 11 before acting Judge Meredith Wine-land and both were sent back to the Saline County Detention Center, where they are being held without bond. Frost said Utsey was a resident of both Benton and Stephens and an employee of a McDonald’s restaurant. His funeral was held in Stephens.
