Two families displaced by blaze E-mail
Tuesday, 06 January 2009
A fire late Monday at the Dogwood Lake Apartments at Arkansas 5 and Alcoa Road temporarily displaced two families.
Two apartments in the six-apartment complex were destroyed by the blaze and water damage, but the quick actions of neighbors and firefighters reportedly saved the structure.
According to Benton Fire Chief Ben Blankenship, no one was home when the fire started just after 10 p.m., but neighbors heard a smoke alarm and called for help.
“Apparently the family had left just before the fire started,” he said. “The neighbors heard the smoke alarms going off and called the fire department.”
Blankenship said 16 firefighters battled the blaze and cleared the scene around 11:30 p.m.
“Nobody was hurt during the fire and everyone was cooperative,” he said. “The Benton Police Department controlled traffic and Med-Tran from Saline Memorial Hospital stood by for any possible medical needs. We are very fortunate to have such a good working relationship with them, and we worked very fast at putting the fire out.”
No persons or pets were injured during the blaze, but firefighters rescued a black Labrador retriever puppy.
“We got him out and gave him some oxygen,” Blankenship said. “It wasn’t long before his tail was wagging and he was happy again.”
Blankenship said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears to have started behind a receptacle in the bedroom area [in apartment 1511]. An apartment below also received major water damage after a water line ruptured because of the fire.
“The water line was burned through and caused more damage than the fire,” Blankenship said. “Two families from the apartments were displaced, but we are told the management of the apartments had placed the families in new apartments.”
Lindsey Management Co. is the owner of the apartment complex.
