Brian Bloom was named publisher of the Courier on Tuesday by B.J. Riley, chief operating officer of Horizon Publications Inc.
Bloom, 51, a third-generation newspaperman, learned the trade from his father beginning at age 6. He succeeds Jim Perry. “I’m excited at the opportunity to work with this long-standing and well-respected newspaper,” Bloom said. A native of Woodbine, Iowa, Bloom Publishing boasted three community weeklies and a small daily newspaper. Bloom began his career working with “hot type” and followed the industry as it progressed through phases of computerization. Bloom was last publisher of DeSoto Times Today in Hernando, Miss. “I look forward to meeting the people of Saline County and getting involved in the area communities. I believe a newspaper is a partner in the community it serves. This newspaper has a proud past and I’m excited about the future,” Bloom said. “It’s my hope we will build on our history and expand our reach in Saline County,” Bloom added. “We’ll offer new sections and expand coverage while maintaining what makes the Courier special — local news, local sports, local coverage.” Bloom’s newspaper experience has spanned the country. Prior to the Times, Bloom was general manager of the Sterling Journal-Advocate in Sterling, Col.; publisher of the Holyoke Sun in Holyoke, Mass.; The Sun Papers, a group of five newspapers serving the Augusta, Ga., area; and publisher with newspapers in Everly, Iowa, Des Moines Community Newspapers and Woodbine, Iowa. Bloom’s wife, Jodi, is a certified fitness trainer and a manager with Club 24 Fitness in Hernando.
