Fletcher, Benton High junior, crowned Mardis Gras queen in annual pageant E-mail

A tradition since 1967, the Mardi Gras pageant on Saturday featured talent and entertainment from 14 Benton High School girls.
    Jordan Fletcher was named queen. During the talent competition, she performed “Waltz in C Sharp Minor” on the piano.
Fletcher, a junior, is the daughter of Jerry and Rhonda Fletcher.
Junior Stacey Willis, daughter of Ricky and Jane Willis, was first runner-up; senior Hannah Black, daughter of Marque Black, was second runner-up; sophomore Lauren Goines, daughter of Stephanie and William Bruning and Jason Goines, was third runner-up; and sophomore Jessica Penn, daughter of Jeff and Lynne Penn, was fourth runner-up.
Senior Marie Claggatt was named Miss Congeniality. Her mother is Nancy Claggatt and her guardians are Gregory and Talayia Johnson.
Senior Megan Perry was named Miss Photogenic. Her parents are Holly and Dave Bodden and Brian Perry.
Willis performed “I Need You to Love Me” on the guitar and also sang the lyrics. Black sang “When I Fall in Love.” Goines performed a tumbling act to “Fighting,” while Penn sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
Claggatt performed a dance routine to “Let Me Praise Him.” Perry danced to “Too Darn Hot.”
Amy Bowen, the 2008 queen, also provided entertainment for the evening.
    Other 2009 contestants included Katy Stracener, Courtney Kemp, Stacey Spivey, Taylor Toney, Destiney Dodson, Donesia Kirby and Javontaye Allen.
    The pageant was sponsored by the French Club when it began in 1967. Since 1971, Mardi Gras has been sponsored by the high school’s Student Council.
    Contributing sponsors included Everett Buick Pontiac GMC, Landers, and Children’s Evaluation & Counseling Center.
