Saline Salvation Army has meals Tuesdays E-mail
Tuesday, 03 February 2009
Meals are being served each Tuesday at the Saline County Salvation Army to bring the community together.
“Anybody can come and enjoy a meal,” Director Todd Skaggs said. “We just want the community to be a part of it.”
The meals wouldn’t be possible without the help of Debbie Kee of First Assembly of God in Benton, Skaggs said
“The church provides most of the food and we provide some side items we receive from Rice Depot, and we also provide a place for people to come and eat and be together,” he said.
The church brings the meals to the Salvation Army at 129 N. Main St. in Benton. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. in the kitchen area in the downstairs portion of the building, Skaggs said.
“We have the dinners on Tuesday nights because the Care Center has a meal on Thursday nights on South Street,” Skaggs said.
“So, we wanted to have a meal during the weeknight as well. Weeks can seem long, so we wanted to offer another night for people who couldn’t afford a meal and help them get through to that next meal.”
The dinners have been held for about two months. “It’s a time of fellowship, we play music, sometimes we have Bible study or we just visit,” Skaggs said.
Some meals are better attending than others, Skaggs noted. “It’s really been a blessing to people in our shelter because it’s one less meal they have to make. But whether one person shows up or 20 or 30, we’re ready to serve.”
He added “to-go” plates are also available for people who need a meal but would rather take it home to eat.
In another matter, a rummage sale will be held Saturday in the back parking lot of the Salvation Army, Skaggs said. The sale will begin at 8 a.m. and last until “whenever,” he said. “We have a lot of stuff to go through and will offer $5 bags.”
