Murder suspect will be evaluated E-mail
Friday, 20 February 2009
A Pine Bluff man accused of attempted murder appeared in Saline County Circuit Court on Tuesday and was given a new court date and ordered to undergo a mental evaluation.
Randy Bishop is charged with criminal attempt to commit capital in the death of a 60-year-old man in Saline County.
A $35,000 bond was set for Bishop in Tuesday’s proceeding, but he had not posted bail as of press time today, according to personnel at the Saline County Detention Center.
Bishop is scheduled to appear before Circuit Judge Grisham Phillips at 9 a.m. on April 20. Phillips will determine if Bishop is fit to stand trial.
Bishop’s charge relates to a Sept. 8 incident when Saline County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a shooting at the intersection of Chicot and Hicks roads in Mabelvale in northeastern Saline County. Deputies reported finding the victim lying in the road with a gunshot wound to his face and upper chest.
The man was reported to be coherent and able to tell a deputy that Bishop shot him in the face with a shotgun. He said Bishop fled the scene in an 1980s model green Dodge Caravan, but deputies later found the vehicle abandoned.
The man was transported to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock by Med-Flight and initially listed in stable condition.
On the same day of the shooting, sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance of Arkansas State Police, Grant County Sheriff’s Office and a dog-tracking team from the Arkansas Department of Correction, took Bishop into custody at U.S. 167 and Grant County Road 53.
