A Mabelvale man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and other violations following a vehicle accident involving a Sheridan school bus, authorities said Thursday.
Just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday, a sport utility vehicle slammed into the rear of a Sheridan School District bus on Chicot Road in East End in northeastern Saline County. No children were hurt, authorities said. Daniel Scott Robinson, 29, of the 19600 block of Robinwood Lane in Mabelvale was identified as the driver of the SUV and was transported to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock with undisclosed injuries. The Sheridan School District reportedly sent a second school bus to take the children to school. According to a Saline County sheriff’s report, Cpl. Brad Hicks said he noticed a heavy odor of intoxicants on Robinson and asked Robinson if he had been drinking. “He appeared to be conscious and alert and answered medical personnel questions with no problems,” Hicks said of Robinson. “I asked Mr. Robinson how much he had to drink and he would not reply. I also noticed he had slurred speech and blood shot, watery eyes.” According to the accident report, the school bus was stopped with “red lights and stop sign displayed” and a student got on to the bus. Robinson’s vehicle reportedly was traveling south on Chicot Road at an unknown rate of speed and struck the rear of the bus. The report also said there were no skid marks or evidence that [Robinson’s] vehicle attempted to avoid the collision. Another officer followed an ambulance to UAMS and charged Robinson with DWI, careless and prohibited driving, no seatbelt and 13 counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. Robinson was reportedly cited and released to UAMS emergency workers. The report also said Robinson refused to submit to a DWI test.
