Benton City Council plans Monday night to vote on two resolutions authorizing the purchase of items for the police department through grant funds.
One resolution would authorize the acquisition of camera equipment and the other is to obtain computer equipment. The camera equipment will be paid for with a $1,000 grant the city has received from the Walmart Foundation’s community grant program, the resolution states. The police department reportedly wants to use the funds to purchase Nikon camera equipment, two memory cards, a flash and an off-camera shoe cord. The other grant, for $4,500, is desired for the purchase of a computer system and storage device for the collection and preservation of Taser video evidence and related criminal investigation equipment. The council also plans to vote on a resolution authorizing the city to enter into a preannexation agreement with Robert Winters for a 2.5-acre site at 5344 Congo Road. Other matters scheduled to come before the council include a resolution ratifying and confirming the appointment of Darrell Wood to the Benton Historic District Commission. Wood will be filling the unexpired term of Jennifer Kelly, who has resigned from the panel. Wood’s term will expire Oct. 1, 2010. The council also plans to vote on an ordinance waiving competitive bidding and authorizing a contract with Mid State Construction Co. to complete a street and drainage repair project in Hurricane Lake Estates in Benton. The cost for the project is $138,269.37, the ordinance states. In other matters Monday night, the council plans to recognize Capt. Kevin Hall of the fire department as the city’s employee of the month. Alderman Bill Donnor, who developed the employee recognition program, will present a plaque to Hall. Also, the mayor plans to introduce the city’s new chief financial officer, Karen Scott, who is succeeding John Walden when he retires in May. Scott began her duties this past week. Council committee reports also may be presented in the meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Benton Municipal Complex’s council chambers. Preceding the meeting will be a 6 p.m. agenda session in the mayor’s conference room. All council meetings and council committee sessions are open to the public.
