No injuries were reported early today when members of the Salem Volunteer Fire Depart-ment responded to a house fire on Congo-Ferndale Road.
The fire started shortly before 1 a.m., said Salem Assistant Fire Chief Mike Moravec. Lake Norrell Volunteer Fire Department and the Bryant Fire Department also responded. The fire in the 9900 block of Congo-Ferndale Road, near Steel Bridge Road, was under control by 3 a.m., Moravec said. Damage was contained to the attic and back area of the house. Moravec said there was some smoke and water damage inside the rest of the house but he did not have a damage estimate as of this morning. Claude White is the homeowner, authorities said, and four people were at the house, along with a dog. Moravec said he believes the fire originated in the fireplace before advancing into the attic. He said Bryant Fire De-partment provided a thermal imaging camera to make sure no person or pet was inside the home and to search for hot spots. Though the volunteer fire department does not have their own thermal imaging camera at this time, Moravec said they will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday. The breakfast will be held at the Salem United Methodist Church from 6 to 11 a.m. with all funds going toward the purchase of a thermal imaging camera. Cost is $3 per adult and children under 6 eat for free.
