Saline Memorial Hospit-al’s health forum topic this month will center on heart attacks in conjunction with American Hearth Month.
Dr. F. Anthony Bennett, Heart Clinic Arkansas cardiologist, will discuss what causes heart attacks and provide tips for prevention. The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thurs-day in classroom 1 at the hospital’s Health and Education Building. Admission is free and lunch will be available for $6. The hospital has picked this week to advocate a healthy lifestyle, which in turn helps promote a healthy heart. The week’s events will culminate Saturday with a 5K walk/run. People may register the day of for $20. All proceeds will go toward the Cardiac Patient Assistance fund established by the Saline Memorial Health Foundation to help cardiac patients in need with medical costs. The 3.1-mile race will begin at 8 a.m. at the hospital and end there as well. Participants are encouraged to arrive early so they may receive their race numbers and register in time. “According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s No. 1 killer,” said Rebecca Jones, SMH marketing and community development director. “We want to encourage Saline County residents to join the fight against the diseases.” The community forum, 5K and other activities give residents the opportunity to do just that, she said. In September 2008, SMH announced the opening of an interventional cardiology program through a partnership with St. Vincent Health System and Heart Clinic Arkansas. These interventional services allow for 24/7 coverage and care for Saline County patients experiencing a cardiac emergency. Clint Mickle, SMH administrative director of Cardiovascular Services, noted the 5K will help expand those services. “As Saline Memorial continues to expand our cardiology capabilities, we realize the need to educate and promote heart health in our community,” he said.
