The Paron community is preparing for a big festival this weekend.
The second annual Paron Mayfest will be held Saturday at Paron Community Center, located at Arkansas 9 and 12th Street. Doors open at 10 a.m. In partnership with Paron Community Trust, the event is being sponsored by Paron Elementary Parent Teacher Student Organization and Paron Lion’s Pride 4-H Club. “There will be a lot of different activities and attractions for the entire family,” organizer Jamie Mullins said. “There’s going to be some good fun.” Admission is free. Activities will kick off by the hour, Mullins said. With Mother’s Day around the corner, the event will feature a pampering area just for moms. “There will be all sorts of neat stuff there, such as candy, Avon, Pampered Chef, ceramics, arts and crafts, jewelry, a massage booth, make up and more,” she said. For pageant enthusiasts, the Paron Mayfest Pageant offers Mr. and Miss divisions. For more information on the pageant, call Cindy Porter at 594-8398. A pie-baking contest is available for a $5 entry fee. Contestants may bake two pies: One for judging and one to donate. Saline County Judge Lanny Fite and Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady are scheduled to judge the contest. An inflatable castle for bouncing will be offered for children and a dunking booth will be on hand. Other activities include pony rides, face painting, and a fire safety smokehouse demonstration by the Paron Volunteer Fire Department. In addition, the Red Cross Bloodmobile will be on site to accept blood donations. A horseshoe tournament will be held. Cost is $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event. Another Mayfest event is the Winona Fishing Tournament, which will take place from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost is $30 per boat. All proceeds will benefit the community center, Paron Elementary PTSO and the 4-H Club. The Paron Flea Market is open this year and will have live music and fried catfish on its parking lot, Mullins noted. Dixie Car Club is making Mayfest its tour for the day, “so their classic cars will be on display,” Mullins said. The community center is part of the Saline Hometown Health Coalition, which is participating in the statewide Blue and You Challenge. Mullins said the community center group has had a “biggest loser” contest and the winner will be announced on Saturday. Mullins added that old cell phones will be accepted as a fundraiser. “It doesn’t matter how old or whether they work,” she said. “There will be boxes in the community center and flea market for people to drop off their phones.” For the community center, funds raised will be used to buy materials for bookshelves in the library. Mullins noted Girl Scouts have been sorting and organizing used books, and the Saline County Library System has been working on setting up an Internet connection at the Paron library. She said the community center has applied for a grant through the county to help with renovations of bathrooms and floors in the main building to jump start the proposed daycare. The community center operates where the Paron High School used to be. The former Paron district merged with the Bryant School District in 2004 under provisions of Act 60 of the Second Extraordinary Session of 2003. The Paron High School was closed in 2006 but the elementary school remains open. For more information about Mayfest events, call Ronda Maxwell at 594-5796 or e-mail
