This week is National Police Week.
Saline County will celebrate on Friday with a memorial service at 10 a.m. at the courthouse gazebo. “The public is welcome to come,” organizer Tamra Gore said. “We’ll have speakers and have a prayer time.” The event is in conjunction with events set fort by Concerns of Police Survivors Inc., which seeks to provide resources to assist in the rebuilding of lives of surviving families and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Gore said names of officers in Arkansas who have been killed in the line of duty will be read. According to the police survivors group’s Web site, each year, between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty. COPS. provides resources to help them rebuild their lives. There is no membership fee to join COPS. The organization was established in 1984 with 110 members. Today, more than 15,000 families. Members include spouses, children, parents, siblings, significant others and affected co-workers of officers killed in the line of duty, according to federal government criteria. COPS is governed by a national board of law enforcement survivors. Programs for survivors include the National Police Survivors’ Conference held each May during National Police Week, scholarships, peer support and programs and retreats for children and adults.
