A public hearing regarding a comprehensive plan for the city of Haskell will be held next month.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, before the Haskell Planning Commission at Haskell City Hall. Mayor Jeff Arey said this is all part of the city’s process of revising and updating its comprehensive plan, zoning and subdivision regulations. The meeting was set at the June 2 Planning Commission meeting, during which Jasmin Moore from Metroplan gave a report. Metroplan is the Central Arkansas transportation planning agency. “Metroplan has been a great help,” Arey said. “Jasmin has done an awesome job helping us with this, which has been a long process.” The hearing also will give the public a chance to hear and make comments regarding a proposed rezoning. At the May meeting, the idea was presented to rezone areas of the city to become residential site builds only. Following up on that idea, Moore presented four versions showing proposed areas to be rezoned. Lengthy discussion followed, including the rules regarding mobile homes already in the area being considered for rezoning. The Planning Commission decided that existing mobile homes would be “grandfathered in,” and the residents would be allowed to update, repair, or replace it with a new mobile home. If the resident sells the mobile home with the land, rules regarding updating and repairing would apply to the new owner. If the property were to be abandoned for a year, only a site built home could be placed on that property, according to the proposed measure. If a site built home were to be torn down or destroyed, only another site built home would be allowed. Likewise, any vacant area that is rezoned R2 would not be allowed to have a mobile home placed on it. “We wanted to make sure people know they come to the hearing and express their thoughts and ask questions,” Arey said. Legal descriptions and additional information regarding the comprehensive planning may be obtained by calling 776-2666 or information may be downloaded from the city’s Web site, www.cityofhaskell.org.
